Help Name the Official Beer of the Hillsboro Hops

The official Brewery of the new Hillsboro Hops single A baseball team, Bridgeport Brewing Company, has announced a contest to name the team’s official beer. The new beer will be a light bodied summer time-style brew that’s triple-hopped using Cascades in the kettle, Sterlings in the Hopjack, and a new variety called Meridians as a dry hop at the end of fermentation. (5% ABV, 28 IBUs).

Extra points for names that are baseball themed and the name can’t already be taken by another beer from another brewery. To submit your idea, visit Bridgeport Brewing’s Facebook page and leave a comment on the referring post. Submissions will be accepted until Monday.

Oregon Garden Brewfest Starts Today

With the warm Spring sun, the unofficial start to the beer festival season is upon us with the Oregon Garden Brewfest.  I’m a bit biased in my love of the OGBF since I currently live in the beautiful town of Silverton, however most will agree that this unique festival has grown significantly over the years and is now a can’t miss event for those in the Willamette Valley. Aside from the great beer and cider, exploring the wonderful Oregon Gardens is a great way to spend a sunny weekend (which it looks to be!).

The 9th annual festival will feature nearly 95 handcrafted beers and ciders from 45 different breweries spanning from Silverton’s backyard to the East Coast. Event hours are Noon to 11 pm Friday & Saturday, and Noon to 6 pm Sunday. If you’re interested in attending the festival for free, they’re still looking for volunteers on Saturday and Sunday. More info can be found here.

Located in the historic town of Silverton, 45 miles south – just over an hour’s drive – from the Portland metropolitan area, the Oregon Garden Brewfest also features live music from more than 20 area bands, food, tasting lessons by Women Enjoying Beer, a Brewer’s Tasting Dinner, a Connoisseur Tasting, and a homebrew competition presented by Capitol Brewers.

Advance admission includes a one-day pass for $15 that features a tasting glass, seven tasting tickets, and express entry; a three-day pass for $25 that includes a tasting glass, 15 tasting tickets, and express entry; and a VIP pass for $50 that includes a tasting glass, 45 tasting tickets, a T shirt and a food voucher. Advance sales are available at http://ogbf2013.blogspot.com. Tickets at the door cost the same, but include only five tasting tickets for one day, 10 tasting tickets for three days, 35 tasting tickets for VIP, and no express entry. Designated drivers pay a cover charge of $5 and receive a bottled water.

A full glass of beer costs four tickets, and a taster costs one ticket. Additional tasting tickets may be purchased for $1 apiece. The event is cash only, with an ATM on-site. Parking at The Oregon Garden is $5 per car; free shuttles will be available to various locations in town.

Reports of My Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

After a very long hiatus, I’m finally back to updating the site. What could possibly keep someone from enjoying a hobby for over 8 months, you ask? This:

Most people know that buying a house can be a lot of work, however most people don’t do this to their house (and for good reason):

The short version of a very long story, is that we gutted most of the house and spent 6 months remodeling it. I needed another 2 months just to recover. There’s still lots of work to be done, but I’m happily able to return to this site. Just in time for my hometown brewfest…

Witch Hunt – A New Fall Seasonal from Bridgeport Brewing

BridgePort Brewing Company, Oregon’s oldest craft brewery, will release its newest fall seasonal this month. The aptly titled, Witch Hunt, is a spiced harvest ale with an intense dry hop character that is finished off with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. BridgePort brewmaster, Jeff Edgerton, used Caramel and Melanoidan malts in this recipe to bring a rich mouth feel and caramel color to the spiced ale.

“With all of the pumpkin ales that come out in the fall, we wanted to try something a little different,” comments Edgerton. “This is still a beer that you can enjoy alongside the comfort foods of fall but the spice flavors are subtle enough that you can have more than just one in a sitting without being overwhelmed.”

BridgePort will host a Witch Hunt release party Thursday, August 9 starting at 5:30 pm at BridgePort Brewpub in Portland. Free and open to the public, attendees can be among the first to try samples of this new fall seasonal while supplies last. The brewpub team will also have a tarot card reader on hand for guests who want to get into the spooky spirit of this new brew.

BridgePort’s Witch Hunt Stats:

IBU’s:   40             ABV:  5.8%    Color: Caramel        OG: 15.8

Description: A spiced harvest ale with a rich caramel color, unique dry hop character and subtle hints of cinnamon and nutmeg.

Ingredients: Our house ale yeast, Caramel and Melanoidin malts (gives a richer mouthfeel) with our NW Pale ale malt base, a new variety of hops called “Meridian” that has a slightly sweet lemony character along with an experimental variety of hops from Hopunion in Yakima,  ground Cinnamon and Nutmeg.

Beer Infographics

It’s amazing how many emails I get for being a fairly new blogger, from people trying to hock a new beer related product/service/etc. It’s nice to get sent something I actually think is useful or interesting. Recently I was sent a new infographic about beer that I think is pretty awesome and thought I should share.

It reminded me of another infographic about beer from one of my favorite humorous sites called The Oatmeal. The two have very different approaches but are both interesting and fun to read. I’ve included the one that was sent to me after the break; you can find The Oatmeal’s version at this link. Enjoy!

A Look Back at OBF 2012

Due to other projects and events going on right now, I wasn’t able to spend nearly as much time at this year’s Oregon Brewer’s Fest as I would have liked. I was however, able to spend a few hours there on Thursday and packed in as many beers as I could while still thoroughly tasting them. Here’s what I had from Oregon with my grade after a 4oz taste of each:

Main Tent

  • Double Mountain – Goliathon: B+
  • Beer Valley – Oregonberry Wheat Ale: B-
  • Collaborator – Pineapple Express: B+
  • Good Life – Traditions Barrel Aged Pale Ale: A- (had this back at the Oregon Garden Brewfest, and it has gotten much better since)
  • Mt Emily – Organic Strawberry Honey Ale: C
  • Oakshire – 25: A+ (crazy how good this beer was using 25 different ingredients!)
  • Widmer – Smooth Cream – N – Ale: A (definitely wins the best name award)

Buzz/Sour Tent

  • Cascade – Strawberry Cream: A+
  • Ninkasi – Sasquatch Wheat Wine: A

Other Notes

This was hands down the busiest Thursday at OBF that I have seen. It seems like the local knowledge of shorter lines and less crazy atmosphere that normally accompanies Thursday has traveled and brought more people in earlier. A great thing for OBF as it (hopefully) means higher attendance throughout the weekend, but I’ll miss not having to wait in line on Thursday.

Oregon Brewers Fest Starts Today

It’s hard to believe that it’s already “the last full weekend in July” and time for the 25th annual Oregon Brewer’s Fest. Instead of writing a preview of the festival, I will point you towards a number of great posts written by other beer writers here in Oregon. I plan on attending the festival tonight and writing more in the coming days.

Mt. Hood Brewing Company Bottles Ice Axe IPA

Ice Axe IPA by Mt. Hood Brewing CompanyMt. Hood Brewing Company out of Government Camp, Oregon has released Ice Axe IPA in 22oz bottles. Mt. Hood’s first bottled beer, Ice Axe will be sold exclusively at Zupan’s Markets and Made in Oregon stores.

“Because all of the ingredients in our beers are from the Pacific Northwest, it’s important for us to share them with people who appreciate our roots,” said Tom Rydzewski, Head Brewer at Mt. Hood Brewing Company. “Zupan’s Markets prioritize quality, fresh, local products and we’re happy to partner with them on this exciting venture.”

Ice Axe is described as an English-style IPA, however the use of Centennial, Mt. Hood, Magnum, Golding, and Willamette hops throughout the boil make this an IPA that west-coast hop heads will feel at home with. Altogether at 60 IBU and 5.7% ABV, Ice Axe was an enjoyable IPA that I would definitely pick up again.
